However, as our first Finalist in Mrs Rogers Recipe Competition, Michelle Gaskell told us, she was inspired at an early age. Her favourite food memory is coming home from school and drifting into the kitchen guided by the delicious decadent smells of her mum’s baking.
She distinctly remembers sneaking extra biscuits and rearranging them so it didn’t look like any were missing. We are pretty sure that 8/10 husbands are guilty of the same “crime”.
Michelle created her recipe to be quick and easy to make, plus flexible enough to be able to change the vegetables and herbs and spices used to suit any season or situation. This is the first recipe that Michelle has ever written down, and we are really hoping it isn’t her last.MRS ROGERS NUTMEG LOVE CAKEBy adminWendy’s love of cooking started when she used to cook as a little girl, standing on a chair, in her late Nana’s kitchen. Her Nana taught her how to look and see what you have in your pantry and fridge, and then cook a most magnificent meal. And she has continued this love with her own adult children who love to cook. She has over 500 cookbooks that she uses for inspiration and her greatest love is to cook for family and friends and to see the enjoyment on their faces.
She says “My favourite meal is one I created. I had visited a farmers market and brought a savoury crepe. I thought ‘I’m going give this a try at home’ and the result ended up to be my favourite meal. A buckwheat crepe with roasted pumpkin, caramelised onions with thyme, baby spinach out of my veggie garden, walnuts, blue cheese....the result is divine.“
Wendy created this recipe as it’s a one-bowl-miracle that all her friends and family keep asking her to make. Her Herbalicious Salmon Pastry Pie is a great recipe for the family that can be added to, changed and adapted depending on what you have in your pantry and what needs to be used. This is a recipe that all her family love, especially her husband. It’s an easy recipe to make, but one that will be eaten by all.
She has fond memories of dinners with her mum and nanna, Jessie. She says “I look towards other mums on the internet, to be honest! I find so many mums out there sharing cost saving and healthy meals and I love trying new things every week depending on the budget. But initially, it was my mum Jenny who taught me the beginnings of baking and cooking, fundamental stuff, with love!”
